Mosley has mixed feelings

Shane Mosley said he supports the California State Athletic Commission’s decision to revoke the license of trainer Javier Capetillo but questioned the same punishment for Antonio Margarito.

Margarito and Capetillo lost their licenses because illegal knuckle pads were found in his hand wraps – and removed – before his fight against Mosley on Jan. 24 in Los Angeles.

Mosley had said before the CSAC hearing on Tuesday that he believed Capetillo was responsible but had doubts as to whether Margarito knew about it.

“Capetillo was the one that put the wraps on and knew the rules and knew better,” Mosley said in a statement issued by Golden Boy. “He knew not to do it because it's illegal but he did it anyway.

“Maybe Margarito shouldn't be punished as much as Capetillo should be."

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy, said the commission had no other choice.

“I think what the commission did was send the signal that there is absolutely zero tolerance for such things,” he said. “They said that (Margarito) not knowing is just not an excuse. Basically, they expect athletes to know what’s going on. Their hands are like lethal weapons; they need to know what’s in those weapons.

“It’s a lesson for all fighters. You really have to be careful who you surround yourself with and what goes on. … Unfortunately, Antonio Margarito suffered the consequences but, again, I don’t think the commission had a choice.”

Mosley admitted to have taken performance-enhancing drugs in 2003 but said his fitness trainer at the time tricked him into doing so.
