10: Reasons Marquez is great
|
A weekly boxing list compiled by Michael Rosenthal. This week: We've done 10 reasons Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are great. Now it's the turn of another great fighter, Juan Manuel Marquez. 1. Two victories over Pacquiao?: Many believe Marquez won each of his fights against Pacquiao. Officially, he drew and lost a split decision. 2. Extremely solid resume: Has faced 14 major alphabet titleholders (going 11-3-1 in 15 fights, the same number as Pacquiao). 3. Thrill factor: Has become a particularly exciting fighter late in his career. 4. Championships and titles: THE RING lightweight champion and No. 2 pound for pound. Also, won six major alphabet titles in three weight classes. 5. Willingness to fight anyone: Pacquiao, Barrera, Casamayor, Diaz, John and Juarez are only a handful of his top-quality opponents. And Mayweather is next. 6. Skills: Is a polished, complete boxer-puncher, particularly in the latter part of his career. 7. Longevity: Has remained a top-level title contender for more than 10 years. 8. Improving with age: Turned in his greatest performances – KOs of Casamayor and Diaz – at 35 years old. 9. Record: 50-4-1 (with 37 knockouts) over 16 years as a professional. He just wins. 10. Resilience: Anyone who gets knocked down three times in the first round by Pacquiao and then gets up to outbox him is tough. Michael Rosenthal can be reached at RingTVeditor@yahoo.com |
