Gomez, Vargas headline June 24 FNC

Junior welterweight prospects Jessie Vargas and Frankie Gomez will co-headline the next Fight Night Club show on June 24.

Gomez (3-0, 3 knockouts), the 18-year-old amateur star from East L.A. recently signed by Golden Boy Promotions, is scheduled to face tough Kenyan Geoffrey Gaya (5-2, 1 KO) in the four-round main event of the Fox Sports Net-televised card from Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Vargas (10-0, 5 knockouts), a talented 21-year-old pressure fighter from Las Vegas, is scheduled to face come-backing former contender Ernesto Zavala (21-4, 9 KOs), of Burbank, Calif., in the six-round co-featured bout.

In his Fight Night Club debut on May 27 Gomez destroyed Akeem Akinbode 46 seconds into the first round. Gaya, who is based in West Palm, Fla., is expected to put up a better fight.

The southpaw, who will be making his U.S. debut on June 24, had never been stopped and is coming off an eight-round decision victory over Russian contender Azad Azizov, who held a 22-2-1 record.

Vargas is a relentless left-hooking fighter that some have compared to a young Antonio Margarito. The Las Vegas native is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and trained by Roger Mayweather.

Vargas, who has already fought three times this year, is coming off an impressive sixth-round stoppage of veteran Arturo Morua on the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley undercard.

Zavala is a 37-year-old veteran who retried for almost five years after suffering a four-round TKO to Jose Armando Santa Cruz in 2005. The crafty southpaw, who owns victories over former title challengers Henry Bruseles, Hector Quiroz and Morua, is trained by Freddie Roach.

Zavala won his first comeback bout, a third-round stoppage of Jason Davis in April.

The undercard of the Golden Boy Promotions show, which will be streamed live on RingTV.com and Ustream.com, will feature 2008 U.S. Olympian Gary Russell Jr. (9-0, 6 KOs) in a six-round featherweight bout, and Roach-trained junior welterweight prospect Jamie Kavanagh (1-0, 1 KO) the four-round TV opener.
