Chavez Jr. withdraws from Wolak fight

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has withdrawn from his Dec. 4 middleweight fight with late-substitute Pawel Wolak due to illness.

Chavez, who was originally scheduled to face Alfonzo Gomez in the main event of the Top Rank-promoted and produced pay-per-view show at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., reportedly battled flu-like symptoms over the weekend and was deemed unfit to fight after waking up with a high temperature on Tuesday morning.

Amid rumors of his inevitable pullout, Chavez (41-0-1, 30 knockouts) worked out for the media on Monday in L.A. and was noticeably heavy, which his handlers claim was due to the training days he missed because of sickness. The contracted weight of his fight with Wolak (27-1, 17 KOs) was increased to 165 pounds to accommodate the son of the Mexican legend, however, when the 24-year-old fighter's fever persisted on Tuesday the fight was called off.

The show, however, will continue with the 12-round bantamweight fight between former titlehodlers Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs) and Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KOs) moving from co-featured bout to the main event.

The lightweight title bout between veteran beltholder Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32 KOs) and contender Urbano Antillon (28-1, 20 KOs) is now the new co-featured bout and a 10-round featherweight bout between young standout Mikey Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) and former title challenger Oliver Lontchi (18-1-2, 8 KOs) rounds out the televised portion of the card.

Wolak, a New Jersey-based Polish veteran, will fight Mexican junior middleweight prospect Jose Pinzon (18-1-1, 12 KOs) in an eight-round bout on the non-televised undercard.
