Marquez-Morales on April 9 in the works

Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales are negotiating to fight on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on pay-per-view television, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said.

“We’re working hard to make that fight,” Schaefer said.

Marquez, who failed to land a third fight with Manny Pacquiao, has rebounded from his one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by beating Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidis in succession. He has never fought Morales.

Morales “retired” in 2007 after losing four consecutive fights but returned to the ring last year, during which he beat three journeymen. He would be a significant underdog against Marquez even though he’s the younger of the two.

Also, middleweight Winky Wright, who hasn’t fought since he lost to Paul Williams in April of 2009, could make his return on the Marquez-Morales card. He has not found an opponent.
