Fernando Vargas to make comeback?

Is Fernando Vargas making a comeback? That’s the word from more than one source close to him.

Vargas, 33, has been seen at ringside for several big fights looking slim and trim, having lost a great deal of weight as a result of diligent training. And apparently it’s not just cosmetic; he plans to get back into the ring.

One source said he plans to fight in March, probably at around 170 pounds. Also, a representative of Vargas has reached out to ESPN about possibly televising his comeback fight.

The source said Vargas would like to fight a few times and then face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The former U.S. Olympian and two-time 154-pound titleholder, known for his fiery personality and excellent boxing skills, hasn’t fought since he lost a majority decision to Ricardo Mayorga in November 2007, his third consecutive loss. Shane Mosley stopped him twice, once in 2006 and again in ‘07.

Vargas, at 20, was the youngest ever to win the IBF junior middleweight title when he stopped Yory Boy Campas in 1998.
