Cotto-Margarito II at New Meadowlands?

altIf Miguel Cotto defeats Ricardo Mayorga on March 12 the Puerto Rican star is eyeing at a rematch with Antonio Margarito in the summer, which could land in the New Meadowlands in New Jersey.

In the back of his mind, Miguel Cotto knows precisely what he wants.

Despite his upcoming fight with Ricardo Mayorga, surely Cotto is looking ahead to summer 2011, when he will probably get his chance at redemption versus Antonio Margarito.

The last time the two met back in July of 2008, Margarito crushed Cotto after eleven brutal rounds. However, just before Margarito's next fight, a TKO loss to Shane Mosley in January of 2009, he and his trainer Javier Capetillo were busted for attempting to load his hand wraps. The incident, which resulted in Margarito's license revocation in California, caused many to wonder if the Mexican veteran used illegal wraps when he fought Cotto, who certainly has his suspicions.

Three years later it appears that the two are headed for a showdown in a fight that promises to be explosive.

Margarito has been inactive since his humbling loss to Manny Pacquiao last November and probably will stay out of the ring until a Cotto-Margaritto fight is inked.

As for a possible destination, with Madison Square Garden unavailable due to renovations, the frontrunner currently is the New Meadowlands Stadium. Cotto has drawn tremendously in the New York area, and a bout in the new Giants and Jets home would undoubtedly be a mega ticket seller.

“We will explore the possibilities,” said Top Rank VP of Boxing Operations Carl Morreti. “We’d love to do it there, but it’s a matter of costs. It’s a great expense to build the outdoor covering in the open-air stadiums. Remember this fight did well in Las Vegas the first time, so we can always take it there.”
