Martin withdraws from Cotto-Mayorga undercard because of injury

Female boxing pioneer Christy Martin will not appear on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga junior middleweight title bout on March 12 due to a severe rib injuury she suffered during sparring, according to a press release sent out on Thursday. Martin's six-round bout against Dakota Stone was scheduled to open the Cotto-Mayorga pay-per-view broadcast. “In sparring about a week ago I got hit with a hard punch to the left side, in the ribs. It was a good punch and it got me real good,” Martin was quoted in the press release. “For the next few days I tried wrapping that area but there was still pain when I tried to spar.” Miguel Diaz, Martin’s trainer, made the decision to withdraw from the fight. "Christy was injured while sparring. She is not a complainer, but I knew she was in a lot of pain,” said Diaz. “I couldn't live with myself if anything bad happened to her during a fight so we made a decision to tell the Top Rank about this." The rematch with Stone, whom Martin outpointed by majority decision in 2009, would have been her first in more than a year and her first bout since her former husband and trainer Jim Martin shot and stabbed her last November. Top Rank, the lead promoter of Cotto-Mayorga, will announce a replacement fight to kick off the PPV show on Friday. |
