Alvarez tentatively scheduled to fight June 18, probably in Mexico

Saul Alvarez is tentatively scheduled to fight again on June 18, most likely in Mexico.

“Canelo” is coming off a one-sided decision over Matthew Hatton in a junior middleweight fight last Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., that gave the 20-year-old his first major title.

Richard Schaefer, his promoter, said it’s important that Alvarez – a huge attraction his native country – rotate between the U.S. and Mexico for his fights.

“He has to stay active there. The fight probably will be in Mexico,” he said.

An opponent has yet to be selected.

In other news:

• Schaefer has begun working on a fight he hopes will pit Adrien Broner against Jason Litzau. No date or venue has been discussed.
• Broner outpointed Daniel Ponce de Leon in a 10-round junior lightweight bout on the Alvarez-Hatton undercard. Litzau, THE RING’s No. 10-rated 130-pounder, is coming off a stunning split-decision upset of Celestino Caballero in November.
• Schaefer said Daniel Jacobs, who stopped Robert Kliewer 1:44 into a scheduled 10-round super middleweight fight on the Alvarez-Hatton Card, might face the winner of Saturday’s fight between Andy Lee and Craig McEwan.
• Football player-turned-boxer Seth Mitchell, a heavyweight prospect who KO’d Charles Davis in two rounds last Saturday, is expected to step up his opposition. One possibility, Schafer said, is veteran Chazz Witherspoon.
• Schaefer is optimistic that Amir Khan will fight Timothy Bradley but insisted the Briton is focused on Paul McCloskey, his opponent on April 16 in the UK.

“I had a meeting with (Bradley’s promoter) Gary Shaw,” Schaefer said. “We had a good meeting. I shared our conversation with Team Khan. And Amir made it clear that’s a fight he wants to do. He’s really just focusing on Paul McCloskey, though. He doesn’t really want to talk about Timothy Bradley right now.”

But …

“Based on what I was told by the Khans and Amir – and based on my conversation with Gary – I definitely feel this is a fight that will happen,” Schaefer said.

• And, finally, talks to have Cuban junior middleweight prospect Erislandy Lara challenge titleholder Cornelius Bundrage have broken off.Instead, Schaefer said, he will try to maneuver Lara into a mandatory-challenger position. Lara is ranked in the Top 11 in three of the four major sanctioning bodies.

“It seems to be clear that at 154 pounds no one wants to fight Lara,” Schaefer said.
