Escalante returns to ring on March 25

Anontio Escalante, who was stopped by Daniel Ponce de Leon in his last fight, returns to the ring in a 10-round junior lightweight bout against Alejandro Perez of Mexico on March 25 in Fairfield, Calif., on Telefutura. In the co-feature, former amateur star Manuel Avila of Fairfield faces Frank Gutierrez of Highland, Calif., in a six-round junior featherweight bout. Escalante (23-3, 15 knockouts) hadn’t lost since 2007 when de Leon knocked him out in three rounds in a featherweight bout in September in Los Angeles. Perez (14-2-1, 9 KOs) is 2-2 in his last four fights and coming off a unanimous-decision loss to prospect Rico Ramos in November of 2009. The resident of Salinas, Calif., avenged his other defeat when he stopped Adolfo Landeros in a rematch in May of that year. Avila (2-0, 1 KO) was once ranked No. 3 in the world as a Junior Olympian. He turned pro in November, outpointing Alexis Hernandez in Los Angeles. Gutierrerz (2-8-2, 1 KO) is a 30-year-old southpaw. |
