Former heavyweight titleholder Sergei Liakhovich will face journeymen Johnnie White on the Tomas Adamek-Kevin McBride card April 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Liakhovich’s first fight since last May.

Liakhovich has fought only three times in more than four years, including twice since signing with former promoter Don King in 2009.

“It was very frustrating,” Sergei said. “I tried everything but my promoter didn’t get me fights. My new advisor, Tony Cardinale, did an awesome job getting me out of that contract. I then signed a promotional contract with Main Events because I saw what they’ve done with Adamek and other fighters.”

Liakhovich (25-3, 16 knockouts) outpointed Lamon Brewster to win the WBO heavyweight title in 2006. He lost the belt in his subsequent fight when he was stopped by Shannon Briggs with one second remaining in a fight he was winning.

The former Olympian from Belarus lost a unanimous decision to Nikolai Valuev in 2008, after which he stopped two journeymen.

Liakovich plans to fight again in July and September as he builds toward what he hopes is another shot at a title.

White (22-4, 18 KOs) has lost his last three fights and four of his last five. He is from Saint Martinsville, La.

The Adamek-McBride card can be seen on pay-per-view television.
