Davis upsets Johnson, winning unanimous decision
|
Dyah Davis upset unbeaten prospect Marcus Johnson by a one-sided unanimous decision in a 10-round light heavyweight bout Friday night in Laredo, Texas. The fight was mostly tactical, which played into the hands of Davis, a good, athletic boxer. Johnson, the aggressor throughout, simply couldn't land punches with any regularity or effect. Davis, the son of Olympic gold meal winner Howard Davis, knocked down Johnson (25-1, 15 knockouts) with a body shot in the ninth round but it didn't make a difference in the scoring. The judges had it for Davis (19-2-1, 9 KOs) 98-91, 98-91 and 96-93. Johnson, a super middleweight, reportedly had trouble making the 170-pound catch weight. He'll probably move up to 175 pounds. Davis probably resurrected his career with the surprising vicotry. He was coming off a decision loss to Aaron Pryor Jr. and a draw against Francisco Sierra in his last two fights.
