Underdogs continue to shock the boxing world with inspirational performances that have caused profound changes in THE RING’s rankings. Two weekends ago a supposedly faded Erik Morales came very close to beating 7-to-1 odds favorite Marcos Maidana in a 12-round fight of the year candidate. The Mexican legend’s spirited effort earned him a spot in THE RING’s junior welterweight rankings. On Saturday, 10-to-1 underdog Orlando Salido knocked out THE RING’s No. 1-rated featherweight Juan Manuel Lopez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and 4-to-1 underdog Victor Ortiz defeated previously unbeaten welterweight beltholder Andre Berto, the magazine’s No. 3-rated 147 pounder, in Mashantucket, Conn.
Most fans and media predicted that Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs) would fold against Berto (27-1, 21 KOs) the moment their HBO-televised bout, his first at welterweight, became a tough fight. Instead, Ortiz out-hustled Berto in a blazing 12-round fight of the year candidate that featured four knockdowns. One of the best things about boxing is that we can never know for sure exactly what will happen once the combatants climb into the ring, and every now and then we are treated to the kind of gems witnessed on Saturday.
