Middleweight beltholder Peter Quillin could soon defend his WBO title against promotional stablemate Danny Jacobs.
No replacement for Agbeko; Darchinyan-Perez main event on Showtime
The promoters were unable to find a suitable replacement for Abner Mares in Showtime's bantamweight tournament. The Vic Darchinyan-Yonnhy Perez fight is the main event Saturday in L.A.
The show will go on … but without Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares.
Agbeko pulled out of his fight against Mares in the final of Showtime’s four-man bantamweight tournament, scheduled for Saturday at Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, after apparently suffering a pinched nerve in his back.
The promoters had hoped to find a suitable replacement for Agbeko but were unable to do so.
Vic Darchinyan and Yonnhy Perez, scheduled to fight in the third-place match, will now take part in the main event on Showtime.
Agbeko reportedly collapsed in pain after a long flight from his home in New York to Los Angeles on Monday, after which a doctor determined he had sciatica. The Ghanian officially pulled out of the fight on Wednesday.
Agbeko had outpointed Perez in a rematch in December to earn a spot in the tournament final. Mares outpointed Darchinyan the same day to reach the final.
