Gomez has an opponent for FNC main event

BY DOUG FISCHER  Junior welterweight prospect Frankie Gomez is scheduled to face Jason Davis in the six-round main event of Fight Night Club on Thursday, April 28, at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Junior welterweight prospect Frankie Gomez has an opponent for his first Fight Night Club appearance this year. The 19-year-old former amateur star from East L.A. will face Jason Davis, a journeyman from Vancouver, Wash., in the six-round main event on Thursday, April 28, at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Gomez (8-0, 6 knockouts) has not fought since he scored a six-round decision over Jose Lugo on January 14. Although Gomez dropped the hardnosed journeyman and won every round, he was overweight for the Telefutura-televised bout and members of the ringside media criticized him for his paunchy appearance and sluggish form.

Most expect a better performance from Gomez, who spent the last two months training in Big Bear, Calif., with new coach Abel Sanchez, on Thursday.

Davis (11-8-1, 3 KOs) probably isn't as durable as Lugo, but the Washington native is bigger, rangier and he's been in with better opposition, including former lightweight champ Joel Casamayor, who the 29-year-old boxer took the eight-round distance in a competitive bout last November.

Lightweight prospect Fidel Maldonado Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs), of Albuquerque, N.M., and junior lightweight prospect Ramon Valadez (7-1, 4 KOs), of Los Angeles, are also scheduled to appear on the televised and internet broadcast portion of the show.

The two-hour show will air on Fox Sports Net on a tape-delay basis in most areas (check your local listings) and live on RingTV.com beginning at 8:00 p.m. PT.
