Vanes Martirosyan stopped Saul Roman at 2:58 of the seventh round of a scheduled 12-round junior middleweight title eliminator on the Sebastian Zbik-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. card Saturday at Staples Center.

LOS ANGELES – Vanes Martirosyan stopped Saul Roman at 2:58 of the seventh round of a scheduled 12-round junior middleweight title eliminator on the Sebastian Zbik-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. card Saturday at Staples Center.

Martirosyan (30-0, 18 knockouts) was knocked down in the first round but fought on even terms with  the determined Mexican through six-plus rounds in a taxing, give-and-take fight. The fight was even on the cards after six rounds.

However, in the seventh, the 2004 U.S. Olympian punctuated a flurry of punches with a straight right that put Roman (34-9, 29 KOs) down and hurt him. Roman was able to get up but was taking a beating against the ropes when the fight was stopped.
