Quillin to face Simms on Khan-Judah undercard
|
Peter Quillin has been added to the stacked undercard for the Amir Khan-Zab Judah 140-pound title unification bout on July 23 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The undefeated super middleweight prospect will face veteran Tarvis Simms in an eight- or 10-round bout, according to Eric Gomez, matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Quillin. Quillin (24-0, 18 knockouts), a 27-year-old Los Angeles resident from Gran Rapids, Mich., is coming off an impressive third-round TKO of former title challenger Jesse Brinkley in April. Simms (27-1-1, 11 KOs), a 40-year-old southpaw from Norwalk, Conn., has only one loss on his ledger, a 10-round decision to former contender Allan Green in October of 2009. Quillin-Simms will not be part of the live HBO broadcast of Khan-Judah, but it will probably be on the international telecast, which will include the chief support to the main event, the IBF junior welterweight elimination bout between Lamont Peterson and Victor Cayo. Gomez says big things await Quillin if he can defeat the crafty lefty in impressive fashion. "Lou DiBella contacted us about Peter facing (RING middleweight champ) Sergio Martinez in October," Gomez told RingTV.com on Thursday. "I think it's a bit too soon for Peter mainly because he hasn't faced a lot of southpaws, so this fight (with Simms) should be good experience for him. After this fight and maybe a couple more bouts, who knows? Maybe Peter will be ready to go after the champ." The undercard of the July 23 show, which is co-promoted by Golden Boy and Main Events, is also expected to include undefeated prospects Frankie Gomez and Sadam Ali in separate bouts. |
