Figueroa barely gets past Cruz
|
Omar Figueroa remained unbeaten by scoring a split decision over Eric Cruz in an eight-round junior welterweight bout on Saturday in Hidalgo, Texas. Figueroa (12-0-1, 9 knockouts) started his career with eight consecutive KOs but the Texan has had two split decisions in his past three fights, the first one a draw against Arturo Quintero in November. Cruz (11-7-3, 11 KOs) had won four straight going into the fight. He is from Puerto Rico. On the undercard, former U.S. Olympian Gary Russell Jr. (16-0, 10 KOs) of Capital Heights, Md., stopped Antonio Mesa (24-10-1, 16 KOs) in the fourth round of a scheduled eight-round junior lightweight bout. Mesa, from Mexico, has lost his last six fights. |
