Jessie Vargas, the prospect from Las Vegas, stopped veteran Walter Estrada with a single left hook 38 seconds into the second round of a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight fight Saturday in Primm, Nev., on Telefutura.

Vargas (16-0, 9 knockouts) appeared to be in a competitive fight early in the second round, when the fighters traded some hellacious punches. Estrada (39-15-1, 25 KOs) landed several vicious body shots during the exchange.

However, the end came quickly. Vargas knocked Estrada off balance with a grazing right that appeared to land on his left shoulder. When he regained his footing, he left himself wide open and Vargas found his chin with a perfect shot.

Estrada fell unconscious to the canvas and lay on his back for several minutes before he was helped to his feet. He seemed to be OK when the official time was announced.

Vargas was coming off a first-round knockout of faded Vivian Harris in April.

Estrada, a southpaw from Colombia, had become an opponent for rising young fighters but was 4-1-1 in his previous six fights.
