Joseph Agbeko said he has recovered from a bout with sciatica and is training normally for his fight against Abner Mares – for the championship of Showtime’s bantamweight tournament -- on Aug. 13 in Las Vegas.

Agbeko and Mares were originally scheduled to fight on April 23 in Los Angeles but Agbeko pulled out shortly before the fight citing his health issue.

The Ghanian is now training in New York, his adopted hometown.

"The physical therapy treatments in Accra (Ghana) worked wonders, and I am happy to report that my body has responded well," said Agbeko, who will be defending his IBF title.  "I'm back in the gym and feel healthy and stronger than ever and will be ready to fight on Aug. 13."

Mares’ future was plunged into uncertainty when Agbeko pulled out. He’s pleased the fight will go on.

"I'm excited to get the fight with Agbeko rescheduled so I can finish what I started and win the bantamweight tournament,” he said.  “It was unfortunate that Agbeko was injured in April, but I'm happy he has recovered and we have a date set now.  I want to fight the best and I know I can beat the best.  I will not rest until I become the best of the best in the bantamweight division."

Agbeko (28-2, 22 knockouts) won the title and earned a spot in the tournament final in his last fight, a decision over Yonnhy Perez in December. Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) reached the final with a decision over Vic Darchinyan on the same card.
