Santa Cruz stops Briceno in 11 rounds
Unbeaten bantamweight prospect Leo Santa Cruz stopped veteran Everth Briceno in the 11th round of their scheduled 12-round main event in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, on Saturday.
Unbeaten bantamweight prospect Leo Santa Cruz continued to impress with an 11th-round TKO victory over two-time title challenger Everth Briceno in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, on Saturday. Santa Cruz, the 22-year-old younger brother of former lightweight contender Jose Armando Santa Cruz, set a torrid pace for his 33-year-old opponent and gradually wore down the older man with his signature body attack.
Santa Cruz (16-0-1, 8 knockouts), of Lincoln Heights, Calif., has now stopped his last seven opponents, including former 115-pound beltholder Jose Lopez in June. Both Lopez and Briceno (33-6-1, 26 KOs) took Fernando Montiel the 12-round distance in 115-pound title bouts.
