Could Khan's next fight be in Canada?

altAfter making his American debut in New York and fighting twice in Las Vegas, could Amir Khan be headed for Canada on Dec. 10?

England's Amir Khan made his American debut in New York in May of last year, stopping Paulie Malignaggi in the 11th round. He outpointed Marcos Maidana this past December in Las Vegas. And he returned to Vegas to stop Zab Judah in a title-unification bout last month.

Now Khan's handlers have an HBO target date of Dec. 10 for his return to the ring, and they believe that it may be time to try a new town if not another country.

"Amir Khan has really become a Global star," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "He's fought in New York, and he's fought in Las Vegas, and I wouldn't mind going back to Vegas again, but maybe there are some other opportunities as well.

"The Staples Center [in Los Angeles] is actually booked, so we're going to be looking at some possible venues and I will be discussing them with the Khans as well. Maybe on the East Coast, maybe even in Canada, because he's a global star."

Canada became a consideration, said Schaefer, in the wake of consecutive appearances there by Bernard Hopkins.

Hopkins battled to a draw with WBC light heavyweight beltholder Jean Pascal at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City in December, and then returned to dethrone Pascal at Bell Centre in Montreal.

"When we went to Canada for the two Bernard Hopkins fights, I really came to appreciate the fans there and I think that the Canadian fight fans embraced the big fights," said Schaefer.

"We think that it would be a great thing for Amir Khan, being one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world in my opinion, to be coming coming to Canada. So I think that that would be something that would be attractive to look at as well."
