Maidana to face Petrov on Sept. 23 in Argentina

Marcos Maidana will return to the ring against largely untested Petr Petrov on Sept. 23 in his native Argentina in response to his canceled matchup against Robert Guerrero. Golden Boy Promotions match maker Eric Gomez said that Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs) will face Petrov in the Villa Ballester area of Buenos Aires, where Maidana has lived since he was 16. The 28-year-old Maidana was supposed to have fought Guerrero on Aug. 27 on HBO but Guerrero had to pull out because of a shoulder injury. The WBA then named Maidana what it calls its “regular champion.” Amir Khan is the WBA 140-pound titleholder.
The Russian-born, 28-year-old Petrov (29-2-2, 13 KOs) of Madrid, Spain, has a 13-fight winning streak, including Petrov has competed mostly in six-to-eight round fights, having gone as many as eight rounds only four times.
