LOS ANGELES – Danny Garcia passed the biggest test of his career, defeating veteran Kendall Holt by a split decision in a 12-round junior welterweight bout on the Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson undercard Saturday at Staples Center.

The fight was relatively uneventful, as both fighters waited to counter the other most of the time. Many rounds were difficult to score.

However, Garcia landed the bigger punches – buckling Holt’s knees a few times – and outworked his more-experienced foe. Holt admitted afterward that Garcia “outhustled me.”

Two judges scored it for Garcia 117-111 (or nine rounds to three) and the third had it 115-113 for Holt.

Holt (27-5, 15) had won his two previous fights. Garcia (22-0, 14) is rated No. 9 by THE RING.
