Referees, judges named for Pacquiao-Marquez III card

RingTV.com has obtained the list of referees and judges for Saturday night's four HBO Pay Per View-televised bouts, the last of which will be RING No. 1 pound-for-pound Manny Pacquiao opposite RING No-5-rated pound-for-pound Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao and Marquez have battled on two previous occasions already: a draw and a split-decision victory for Pacquiao in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Referee Tony Weeks will be the third man in the ring for Pacquiao-Marquez III, as noted by Nevada State Athletic Commission director Keith Kizer. Most notably, Weeks worked Marquez's lopsided, unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KOs) in September of 2009, as well as Pacquiao's eighth-round stoppage of Oscar De La Hoya in December of 2008. "Tony Weeks is very, very good referee," said Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum. "I think that they picked him this time because he speaks Spanish, and so he can communicate with Marquez and his corner." None of the judges -- Robert Hoyle, Dave Moretti, Glenn Trowbridge -- was involved in the previous two bouts between Pacquiao and Marquez, although Moretti has history with both fighters. Moretti has worked four of Pacquiao's past five fights, and was also among those judging at ringside for Marquez's loss to Mayweather. Moretti scored it for Mayweather, 119-108. He also had Pacquiao routing Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and De La Hoya by respective scores of 120-108, 108-100, and, 80-71 at each bout's conclusion. Trowbridge also had Pacquiao over Mosley, 119-108. "The judges are really good judges. I'm very satisfied with the judges," said Arum. "The camps of both sides had the opportunity to either or accept or reject any of the judges, and they didn't reject the judges." In a 12-rounder, 28-year-old RING No. 8-rated pound-for-pound Tim Bradley (27-0, 11 KOs) will put his WBO junior welterweight belt on the line opposite 40-year-old former four-time titleholder and Cuban Olympic gold medalist Joel Casamayor (38-5-1, 22 KOs). Referee Vic Drakulich has been chosen to referee Bradley-Casamayor, with Nevada-based Adalaide Byrd and Burt Clemens, as well as Mexico's Levi Martinez being the judges. In a 10-round, junior welterweight bout, unbeaten 31-year-old "Mile High" Mike Alvarado (31-0, 22 KOs), of Denver, Colo., will pursue his 10th stoppage over his past 12 bouts against 28-year-old Breidis Prescott (24-3, 19 KOs), of Colombia, who is best known for a 54-second knockout over RING No. 1-rated junior welterweight and current WBA/IBF beltholder Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KOs) in September of 2008. In the initial televised clash of junior lightweights, 26-year-old Luis Cruz (19-0, 15 KOs), of Puerto Rico, will be after his seventh knockout in his past right fights and his second consecutive stoppage victory when he meets 23-year-old Juan Carlos Burgos (27-1, 19 KOs) of Mexico. Burgos is pursing his third straight win since losing by unanimous decision to Japan's Hozumi Hasegawa in a failed bid to earn the WBC's vacant featherweight belt in November.
