Miffed Marquez: Judges saw different fight than everyone else

LAS VEGAS -- Over the course of three meetings with RING No. 1-rated pound-for-pound Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez believes that he has been denied the right to be called the winner three times.

Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KOs) also asserts that RING No. 2-rated pound-for-pound, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KOs), to whom he has lost a lopsided, unanimous decision, would simply be too much for the 32-year-old Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs), who has twice endured failed negotiations to make a bout with Mayweather.

So frustrated was Marquez at the result of their third bout that he threatened to retire rather than face the prospect of a fourth bout opposite Pacquiao.

It was Pacquiao's third controversial verdict against Marquez, whom he had battled through a draw and split-decision win in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Marquez retained his WBA and IBF featherweight belts after their first fight, but lost his WBC junior lightweight crown four years later.

Juan Manuel Marquez on the decision:

"I don't know what I need to do change the minds of the judges. Honestly, we're very happy about the performance that we had in the ring tonight. What we need to do is to sit down with my family and with my camp.

"We need to make a decision about whether or not to continue in this sport or to just simply retire from this sport. Honestly, it's a result of the fight that I would consider retiring. 

"The thing that makes me think about retirement is that I prepared myself so hard for this fight and in the 18 years of my career that I've been working so hard, this fight was the biggest fight. 

"So I wanted to really wanted the judges to score the fight the way that it should have been scored, and it's tough to accept the way that they scored it.

"I really think that I need to drop him, and then, even if I did, that they would somehow pick him back up and put him back into the ring.

"I don't know what type of performance that I need to have in the ring to get the decision. I'm just very frustrated tonight."
