Undefeated middleweight standout Gennady Golovkin knocked out former title challenger Lujan Simon in the first round to retain his WBA "regular" belt in Düsseldorf, Germany, on Friday.

Golovkin (22-0, 19 knockouts) connected with a short hook on the inside which dropped Simon flat on his back where the 32-year-old Philadelphia veteran was coutned out at 2:17 of the round.

Simon (23-4-2, 12 KOs), who lost a 12-round decision to Arthur Abraham in a failed bid for the IBF title in 2009, had never been stopped in his nine-year career.
