Q&A with Robert Garcia: Donaire could be my Frazier, Ali - Next

RingTV.com: How would you describe the three-fight period during which you've worked with Margarito?

RG: I have no regrets at all. Working with Margarito has been a great experience. He came in and made myself and my gym and my fighters think differently. We trained differently because of the way that he trains and what he brings into the gym during the morning runs and when he's in the gym training.

It's something that helped me out as a trainer and it helped my fighters out as fighters. They see what it takes to be in those kinds of fights. They see what it takes to be in mega fights -- going against a Manny Pacquiao and against a Miguel Cotto.

Of course, you're not in there 100 percent sure that you're going to win that fight. But Brandon will be in that situation when he's got to fight those kinds of names. You win some, and you might lose some. You may not be able to win them all.

RingTV.com: What's next for Margarito?

RG: Well, bringing Margarito in with over 15 years of experience with trainers who trained him a certain way, you can't really change a fighter after so many years of fighting one way. But it has been a great experience in itself. It was great.

We have a great relationship, and I don't regret working with him at all. I actually spoke to him a couple of days ago, and he wants to be very smart about choosing his next fight. He agreed to things that I've told him. The next couple of months, we'll know something.

But it's going to be his decision. It's going to be up to his wife and his managers, who have been with him for something like 15 years. So they'll make that decision on their own. I've only been around for a little over a year, so that's not a lot of time for me to be in position to call the shots.

But I'm still supporting him. I talked to him and I gave him all of my support. I told him that I would support him in whatever he decides to do.
