Mayweather, who turns 35 next month, and Alvarez are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, which has expressed interest in matching the two. Pacquiao and Bradley are handled by Top Rank Inc., whose contract with Cotto has expired, making him a free agent like Peterson.
Penagaricano shared his thoughts on recent developments, as well as the presence of Cotto's new trainer, Pedro Diaz, a PHD in Pedagogical Sciences and an ex-university professor in sports science who replaced Manny Steward for the Margarito fight.
RingTV.com: Can you shed any light on the status of Miguel's considerations for fights with Canelo and Pacquiao?
Gaby Penagaricano: I think that it's a bit premature. Obviously, we had a great year starting out. We had a wonderful run with Top Rank, our very good friends, with Bob and [Top Rank President] Todd [duBoef]. We had and still have an excellent relationship with Top Rank. Even though the contract is over, the relationship is still there.
We don't know what's going to happen yet, so it's a little bit premature to say. I know things are moving quickly. But we will have to wait a little bit more to see finally what happens with Pacquiao and Mayweather. We don't know that yet.
I think that it's premature to say until the time that we know what's going to happen with those two. We don't know what's going to happen on our end until we see what happens there, so we're going to have to wait a little bit more.
RingTV.com: Would it be accurate to say that Cotto has been considered in the past week for both fights against Canelo and Pacquiao?
GP: No, honestly, and you know that I'm a straight shooter. That's not accurate. We have had no discussions at all regarding Canelo. At all. Of course, we've received calls from everywhere. Everybody.
Now that everybody knows that Miguel is a free agent, you know, it's been a situation where everybody's calling. Obviously, though, again my response so far is that we just have to wait a little bit more.
RingTV.com: How much more?
GP: I think that it's very close. I know that the time is very close. We will know very soon what's going to happen. I would say in the next couple of days.
I think. Once that is known, and when that is settled, then I think that we'll have a clear paved way to do our plan.
RingTV.com: So you have not spoken to Arum?
GP: Of course, we've been in contact with Bob Arum, although there have been no discussions specifically as to any fight. Of course we've been approached by many other promoters as to making a fight.
But I think that it is a little bit premature. We're getting there, but it's just that we have to wait and see in the next couple of days.
RingTV.com: Have you heard reports that Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee, has publicly stated that her husband wants a return bout with Cotto?
GP: I read that. I read it. I read an article. The information that I have is that that which you have read is the same that I have read. So, that's all that I have.
