The British Boxing Board of Control has slammed the proposed heavyweight contest between David Haye and Dereck Chisora, scheduled for July 14, at Upton Park, London, and warned any of its members involved will lose their license. Details of the all-British clash, which is being sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation, were announced on Tuesday by promoter Frank Warren, who is also Chisora’s manager. Although neither Haye nor Chisora hold a BBBoC license at the moment, Warren denies doing anything illegal by staging the grudge match on UK soil. However, the British governing body views the situation very differently - and in a long, carefully-worded statement released Wednesday and signed by general secretary Robert Smith, it threatened to come down hard on anyone under its jurisdiction who participates in the controversial event. It read: “It has come to the attention of the Stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control that the Luxembourg Boxing Federation is considering putting on a promotion within the jurisdiction of the Board between Dereck Chisora and David Haye. The Stewards condemn any attempt by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation to do so. ” And it later continued: “Those behind this proposal are not concerned with the interests of the sport of professional boxing. Any member who participates in such a promotion would bring the sport of boxing into disrepute…in such circumstances the British Boxing Board of Control would accept that member’s repudiation of the Constitution as terminating his/her membership and his/her licence.” For the full BBBoC statement go to: |
