Olympics: Breazale, Hunter qualify for U.S.

Super heavyweight Dominic Breazale of Alhambra, Calif., and Michael Hunter of Las Vegas qualified for the London Olympics with victories in the Americas Qualifier on Friday in Rio de Janeiro.

Super heavyweight Dominic Breazale of Alhambra, Calif., and Michael Hunter of Las Vegas qualified for the London Olympics with victories in the Americas Qualifier on Friday in Rio de Janeiro.

The United States has nine qualifiers in 10 weight clases.

Breazale, a former quarterback on the Northern Colorado football team, rallied to defeat Gerardo Bisbal of Puerto Rico 15-12 in his semifinal match and earn a berth in the Games. Hunter outpointed Julio Castillo of Ecuador 14-8 to qualify.

Also Friday, middleweight Terrell Gausha of Cleveland and light heavyweight Marcus Browne of Staten Island, N.Y., won their semifinal matches and will fight for their division titles in the tournament. Lightweight Jose Ramirez of Avenal, Calif., and light welterweight Jamel Herring lost on Friday but had already earned Olympic berths.

Breazale and Hunter were also scheduled to fight in their division finals Saturday.

Only Australia is sending a full, 10-man team to London. The U.S. and Kazakhstan are the only countries that will send nine.

201+ pounds: Dominic Breazale, Alhambra, Calif./USA dec. Gerardo Bisbal, PUR, 15-12
