Vicente Escobedo dominated game Juan Ruiz to a one-sided unanimous decision in the 10-round main event of a Solo Boxeo Tecate card in Escobedo’s hometown of Woodland, Calif., on Saturday.

The 30-year-old junior lightweight fringe contender won by scores of 100-90 (twice) and 99-91, but the bout wasn’t easy. Ruiz, a 33-year-old journeyman from Newhall, Calif., was determined and aggressive, although outclassed by Escobedo (26-3, 15 knockouts), a 2004 U.S. Olympian who has fought former titleholders Robert Guerrero (L 10), Kevin Kelley (TKO 2) and Carlos Hernandez (UD 10).

By beating Ruiz (23-10, 7 KOs) with a mix of stiff jabs, accurate rights and lateral movement, Escobedo earned his first shot at a major title, a July 21 date with undefeated WBO 130-pound titleholder Adrien Broner, THE RING’s No. 3-rated junior lightweight.

Escobedo is currently unranked by THE RING.
