LOS ANGELES -- Lucas Matthysse ended a competitive fight on the Victor Ortiz-Josesito Lopez card in dramatic fashion, stopping Humberto Soto at the end of the fifth round Saturday at Staples Center.

Matthysse (31-2, 29 knockouts) and Soto (59-8-2, 35 KOs) fought on fairly even terms for four-plus entertaining rounds, although the Argentine seemed to land the cleaner and harder shots.

Then, in the closing seconds of the fifth round, Matthysse landed two overhand rights that stunned Soto and then put him down and hurt him with a straight right a split-second before the bell sounded.

Soto was able to get up and go to his corner. However, he apparently was unresponsive when the referee questioned him and the fight was stopped.

Sotto, from Mexico, had never been stopped.

A full report will follow after the main event.
