LOS ANGELES -- Josesito Lopez pulled off a stunning upset when Victor Ortiz quit on his stool after the ninth round because of what he said was a broken jaw Saturday at Staples Center.

Lopez (30-4, 18 knockouts) and Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KOs) engaged in a thriller as long as it lasted, with both fighters landing big, eye-catching shots in spirited exchanges from beginning to end.

Ortiz said he felt pain in his jaw beginning in the fifth round.

"Josesito broke my jaw," Ortiz said. "I had my mouth open and he broke my jaw. I couldn't close my mouth. It happened early in the (ninth) round. The corner wanted me to continue but I just couldn't."

The loss spoils plans to have Ortiz fight Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 15.

A full report will follow shortly.
