Once-beaten flyweight contender Toshiyuki Igarashi narrowly outpointed Sony Boy Jaro to win THE RING and WBC 112-pound titles in Saitama, Japan on Monday, ending the rugged Filipino journeyman's Cinderella story.

In March, Jaro (34-11-5, 24 knockouts) shocked the boxing world by scoring a sixth-round stoppage of Thai legend Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in the flyweight champ's native Thailand. The 50-bout veteran's victory is still the biggest upset of 2012, however, Jaro's WBC mandatory challenger, Tokyo-based southpaw Igarashi, threatened to shorten his victory lap and that's just what the 28-year-old 2004 Olympian did on Monday.

Igarashi (16-1-1, 10), THE RING's No. 9-rated flyweight going into the Jaro fight, used his height and reach advantages to outpoint the more aggressive free-swinging champ to a hard-fought split decision, winning by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 112-116.

Igarashi, who fought with a bad cut over his left eye, won his ninth straight bout. Jaro, who is only 30, saw his win streak snapped at five bouts.
