THE RING middleweight champion Sergio Martinez graces the cover of Argentina's most recent edition of Rolling Stone magazine.

"I am very appreciative to Rolling Stone for placing me on the cover," said Martinez, who was selected Fighter of The Year for 2010 by THE RING and the Boxing Writers' Association of America.

"It is a great honor for me, and I had a great time working with the people at Rolling Stone on the latest edition of their magazine."

Martinez (50-2-2, 28 knockouts), who turns 38 on Feb. 21, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) to take the WBC belt last September.

"We at DiBella Entertainment have always believed that Sergio rocks," said Martinez's promoter, Lou DiBella. "What better publication then to grace the pages of Rolling Stone? That is just flat out cool."

Martinez rose from a 12th-round knockdown to defeat Chavez in their HBO PPV-televised fight, during which he lost just four of the 36 rounds scored by judges Dave Moretti, Adalaide Byrd and Stanley Christodoulu, who had him winning, 118-109, 118-109 and 117-110.

Martinez's popularity has soared due to his bravery against Chavez, whom he fought toe-to-toe in 12th.

"I am very proud and very excited that he is being recognized for his popularity in Argentina," said Martinez's advisor Sampson Lewkowicz. "This is a tremendous honor to be part of, let alone on the cover of such a historic magazine as Rolling Stone."

Martinez is the subject of "a very well written article" in the magazine, according to Nathan Lewkowicz, vice president of Sampson Boxing, who adds that, "it introduces people that do not follow boxing to one of the sport's best representatives."

Martinez will next face unbeaten British contender Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KOs) on April 27 in his native Argentina on HBO with plans to "pursue a rematch" on Sept. 14 against Chavez Jr.

Murray battled ex-WBA beltholder Felix Sturm to a draw in December of 2011, and is coming off November's sixth-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Jorge Navarro (12-1, 10 KOs).
