Burns' camp fuming over Vazquez delay

Ricky Burns’ manager Alex Morrison has called the treatment of Scottish WBO lightweight holder “disrespectful” following the postponement of his unification bout against Mexican IBF counterpart Miguel Vazquez.

A viral infection is reportedly behind Vazquez’s weekend withdrawal – less than two weeks before the March 16 showdown at Wembley Arena, London. British promoter Frank Warren announced on Monday that the clash would now take place on April 20 at the same venue.

However, Burns (35-2, 10 KOs), whose last fight against Jose Ocampo was also called off before Christmas, is believed to be fuming at the latest setback in his career, while Morrison seemed to suggest that they hold Warren in some way responsible.

“We are very unhappy with this latest postponement,” he told STV. “Especially after the fight was called off in December – and now this. This is unacceptable. I spoke to Ricky this morning. As you can imagine he's upset.

“He's sacrificed a lot, training and the cost of sparring partners. That's about £12,000 of his own money in training costs he's now down over the last two fights. The treatment of him is pretty disrespectful.”

As for the proposed new date for the 29-year-old from Coatbridge to meet Vazquez (33-3, 13 KOs), Morrison was equally dismissive, apparently throwing doubt on whether the fight will actually happen.

“They can say what they want about it. I'm not saying if it is or isn't going to go ahead on that day. Let's just say our relationship with Frank Warren is pretty strained,” Morrison said.

Meanwhile, Welshman Nathan Cleverly’s defense of his WBO light heavyweight title against Robin Krasniqi, which was on the original Burns-Vazquez card, has also been moved to April 20.
