Bob Arum said Julio Cesar Chavez could fight Brian Vera next, and eventually, Andre Ward.
HBO or Showtime for Broner-Malignaggi?
Although Paulie Malignaggi is employed as a Showtime commentator, the possibility exists that he could face Adrien Broner on HBO on June 22 at Barclays Center.
UPDATE: According to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer's video interview, Broner-Malignaggi is headed for HBO
"Adrien Broner has been fighting on HBO, and I'm sure that's going to continue, so I'm going to be talking to them next week, because first, I needed to get the fight done. But yes, we are planning on doing that with HBO.
"HBO could have maybe objections because some of these fighters went over to Showtime, and Showtime could have objections about this, but at the end of the day, we need to do what is right for the fighters, and I'm sure that we have enough talent.
"Our fighter pool is so deep that I think that there is enough for everyone. We're not exclusive to Showtime, and we're not exclusive to HBO.
I have nice relationships with both of them, and I think that there should be enough talent within the Golden Boy stable that both networks can get certain fights. To answer your questions more specifically, no, Showtime has no objections to that."
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- On Saturday night, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer declared that a deal to match undefeated WBC beltholder Adrien "The Problem" Broner and WBA welterweight titleholder Paulie Malignaggi on June 22 at Barclays Center is "basically done".
Schaefer's e-mailed confirmation was made from ringside at Barclays Center prior to the HBO-televised victory by 48-year-old former RING light heavyweight and middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins and IBF 175-pound titleholder Tavoris Cloud.
A 23-year-old two-division titlewinner, Broner (26-0, 22 knockouts) scored his sixth straight stoppage victory in the fifth-round last month against ex-beltholder Gavin Rees on HBO.
A 32-year-old Brooklyn native and winner of five straight welterweight fights, two of them by knockout, Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KOs) is Malignaggi is coming off October's split-decision victory over Pablo Cesar Cano at Barclays Center on Showtime, the network for which he is employed as a ringside commentator.
So when Broner and Malignaggi meet, will the fight take place on HBO or Showtime?
If it's HBO, Malignaggi said he has been assured by Schaefer that Showtime Sports' boss Stephen Espinoza would give his blessing.
"I don't know. I've been assured by Richard Schaefer -- although I would want to talk to Stephen Espinoza myself -- but I've been told by Richard Schaefer that if we take the fight to HBO, it won't matter to Stephen," said Malignaggi, during an interview from ringside at Hopkins-Cloud.
"But I would still want to discuss it with Stephen, internally, and make sure that all things are good, because Showtime has been with me 100 percent, and I don't want to ruin that relationship. They've been really awesome with me. Plus, I want to call Floyd's fight in May, you know?"
Malignaggi was referring to a May 4 Showtime Pay Per View-televised defense by pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., who will make his first-ever appearance on HBO's rival network against Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"I've been told that it can be worked out," said Malignaggi. "But, again, you know, I would talk to Stephen Espinoza to make sure, because I don't want to offend my guys at Showtime. They've been awesome with me."
What is a safe bet is that a promotion featuring Malignaggi would benefit from either HBO Sports' 24/7 series, or, its counterpart, Showtime's All-Access.
"If it's on HBO, do a Malignaggi-Broner 24/7, and if it's on Showtime, do an All-Access," said Malignaggi. "I'm going to go into the fight up three rounds to one just because of the trash talking win."
A native of Brooklyn, Malignaggi has not lost since falling by 11th-round knockout as a junior welterweight against Amir Khan in a failed bid to earn the WBA's 140-pound belt in May of 2010.
