Four-time, three-division titlewinner Miguel Cotto may have lost by unanimous decision to WBA junior middleweight beltholder Austin Trout in December, but he landed one, wicked shot to the jaw of his conqueror that earned a victory for photographer Tom Hogan of Hogan Photos. Hogan captured a brutal, left hook that was landed by Cotto during the Puerto Rican's setback at at New York's Madison Square Garden, and, in doing so, will be recognized for the year's best action shot at the 88th annual Boxing Writers Association of America Dinner on April 11 at Capitale in New York. Al Bello, of Getty Images, was first in the feature photo category for a shot of an exuberant Juan Manuel Marquez leaping onto the ropes to celebrate December's sixth-round knockout over Manny Pacquiao. Bello was also runner-up to Hogan in the action photo category.
GUILLERMO JONES FACES DENIS LEBEDEV ON MAY 17 Southpaw WBA cruiserweight beltholder Denis Lebedev (25-1, 19 KOs), of Chekhov, Russia, will meet former beltholder Guillermo Jones (38-3-2, 30 KOs), of Colon, Panama, on May 17 at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia, promoter Don King announced on Tuesday. Jones, who turns 41 on May 5, will be after his fourth straight stoppage win, his eighth consecutive victory and his seventh knockout during that time. Jones last suffered defeat by split-decision to current heavyweight contender and ex-RING 200-pound champion Steve Cunningham in April of 2005. But Jones has not been in the ring since November of 2011, when he knocked out Michael Marrone in the sixth round. He was stripped of the WBA's belt due to inactivity. "I tell the Russian fans who are ringside to be careful, because there will be blood," said Jones, who has predicted that he will dispatch Lebedev in five rounds or less. "I am the tiger, but I don’t speak Russian. No translator will be needed as my hands will speak for me." Lebedev, 33, will be after his third consecutive stoppage win and his fifth straight victory as well as his fourth knockout during that run. Lebedev last suffered defeat by split-decision to current WBC beltholder Marco Huck in December of 2010, but rebounded from the loss with a 10th-round knockoutt of Roy Jones Jr. in May of 2011. In November of 2011, Lebedev won the organization's vacant belt with a unanimous decision over James Toney. "I come from Chekhov and strong people come from my city," said Lebedev, who is trained by fellow Russian and former 140-pound titleholder Kostya Tszyu. "I'm glad [they] have named the fight, 'The One Will Stand,' as I plan on being the last man standing at the end of the fight."
