Matthysse signs with Haymon before Peterson showdown
Junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse has aligned himself with powerful boxing advisor Al Haymon ahead of his May 18 showdown with Lamont Peterson.
LAS VEGAS -- THE RING No. 1-rated junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse, of Argentina, has retained Al Haymon as his advisor in advance of fighting IBF beltholder Lamont Peterson on May 18 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, according to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer.
Matthysse (33-2, 31 knockouts) has had five straight stoppage wins since sandwiching disputed decision losses to left-handers Zab Judah and Devon Alexander around an eighth-round stoppage of southpaw DeMarcus Corley. Matthysse is coming off January's first-round knockout of Mike Dallas Jr.
Peterson (31-1-1, 16 knockouts) is coming off February's eighth-round stoppage of ex-titleholder Kendall Holt at The D.C. Armory in his Washington, D.C., and is 4-0-1, with three knockouts since falling to current WBO welterweight beltholder Tim Bradley by unanimous decision in December of 2009.
