Garcia signs to fight Lopez on June 15
RING and WBO featherweight champion Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia says he has signed his half of a deal to face Juan Manuel Lopez on June 15.
Unbeaten RING and WBO featherweight champion Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia has informed RingTV.com that he has signed his portion of the deal for a June 15 fight against former titleholder Juan Manuel Lopez at American Airlines Arena in Dallas.
"That's true," said Garcia. "I just signed my part of the deal for June 15 in Dallas, Texas, against JuanMa Lopez. That's true."
Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs) is coming off January's eight-round technical unanimous decision over Orlando Salido, who has knockout wins over Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs) from April of 2011 and March of 2012.
"This is my first title defense," said Garcia, "and I want to show everybody that I've got more than what they saw in my last performance."
Lopez, who has agreed to terms and is expected to finalize his paperwork this week, sandwiched a second-round knockout of Mike Oliver in October of 2011 between the losses to Salido, and has won his past two fights by ninth- and second-round knockout.
"I think that he's pretty hungry. He knows what it's like to be a champion, and to be on top of the sport," said Garcia.
"He was there, and I'm pretty sure that he wants to be back there. If he were to beat me, then he jumps back to where he once was, but that's why I want to make sure that I'm ready, so I can stay where I'm at."
