Top Rank signs gold medalist Murata to debut in August
Japanese Olympic gold medalist Ryota Murata has signed with Top Rank and will fight at middleweight as a professional.
Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum and Todd duBoef, CEO and president of Top Rank, respectively, will host a news conference luncheon on June 10 at The Beverly Hills Hotel to formally announce the signing and professional debut of 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Ryota Murata, their company stated on Monday.
The event, at noon PT, will introduce Murata, who competed for Japan in the middleweight division and will continue to do so as a professional. Murata's gold medal was the first for his country in boxing since bantamweight Takao Sakurai won in 1964, and is also the first-ever boxing medal for Japan in a weight class other than bantamweight or flyweight.
"He'll fight in Japan in the beginning of August. The exact city and date will be announced at the press conference," said Arum. "He's professional boxing ready. He fights like a professional. He's a great puncher and he's going to be a really dangerous foe in the pro ranks. He's phenomenal. He doesn't fight like the amateurs do."
