Undercard report: Orozco, Breazeale win by KOs
San Diego-based junior welterweight Antonio Orozco had few issues getting rid of Colombia's Ivan Hernandez on the Abner Mares-Jhonny Gonzalez undercard.
CARSON, Calif. – San Diego-based junior welterweight Antonio Orozco (18-0, 14 KOs) had few issues getting rid of Colombia's Ivan Hernandez (29-4, 22 KOs), putting him down three times before stopping him in the third round. Orozco's ruthless body work helped get the job done. He is now being targeted for a future date on ShoBox, according to series producer Gordon Hall. Hernandez had previously campaigned at 130 pounds and has been largely inactive the past five years.
2012 Olympic heavyweight Dominic Breazeale (6-0, 6 KOs) scored a fourth-round knockout of the experienced Lenroy Thomas (16-3, 8 KOs). Breazeale took some shots in the process of grinding down his opponent. He then buckled Thomas in the fourth, and a follow-up barrage ending with a body shot put him down. The end came at 2:29 when Thomas was counted out.
2012 US Olympian Joseph Diaz Jr. (7-0, 5 KOs) of South El Monte, Calif., took care of overmatched Noel Mendoza (6-3-1, KO) of Phoenix, Ariz., finishing him at 2:29 of the third round. Mendoza visited the canvas twice in the third before referee Raul Caiz Jr. halted the bout.
East Los Angeles featherweight Julian Ramirez (9-0, 6 KOs) served up a good appetizer prior to the main portion of the card, stopping a game Abraham Rubio (3-1-1, 1 KO) with seconds remaining in the opening round. The two traded at a furious pace with Ramirez landing the more compact and heavier shots. The stoppage came at 2:58.
Nacho Beristain-led featherweight prospect Rey Vargas (15-0, 14 KOs) of Guadalajara stopped the experienced Juanito Rubillar (49-22-7, 24 KOs) at 2:58 of the fourth round.
Junior featherweight gatekeeper Jesus Ruiz (29-5-5, 21 KOs) of Nogales, Mexico took a wide eight-round unanimous decision over Los Angeles' Enrique Quevedo (14-6-1, 9 KOs). Ruiz prevailed via scores of 80-72 and 79-73 twice.
Two fighters from the Mayweather Promotions stable opened the card with victories. Super middleweight Lanell Bellows (5-0-1, 4 KOs) took a four-round decision over Leshon Sims (5-16, 3 KOs) of Inglewood, Calif., while fellow Las Vegas super middleweight Ronald Gavril (6-0, 5 KOs) stopped Downey, Calif., native David Couchrane (2-3, 2 KOs) at 1:50 of the second round.
