Pascal, Lemieux, E. Alvarez set for Stevenson-Cloud card
Former titleholder Jean Pascal will appear on the undercard of Saturday's HBO-televised clash between RING and WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and Tavoris Cloud.
Former light heavyweight champ Jean Pascal, twice-beaten middleweight David Lemieux, and undefeated 175-pounder Eleider Alvarez are set to appear on the undercard of Saturday's HBO-televised main event between RING and WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and Tavoris Cloud at Bell Centre in Montreal, promoter Yvon Michel announced on Thursday.
Pascal (27-2-1, 16 KOs) will be in action for the first time since his unanimous-decision triumph over Aleksy Kuziemski, which was his first bout since losing to Bernard Hopkins in May of 2011, and is already slated for a clash with former IBF super middleweight titleholder Lucian Bute on Jan. 18.
Pascal, 30, will meet George Blades (23-4, 16 KOs), 39, at 180 pounds, according to Michel.
"It is a privilege and a luxury to have Pascal's participation in Saturday night's event. He is still considered one of the biggest stars in the light heavyweight division, and we all look forward to seeing him back in action," said Michel.
"He's fighting for all the right reasons on Saturday, and it was good to see him happily smiling during training camp. Currently, there is no opponent who is more important for Jean's career than Blades. I expect an inspired performance from him as HBO executives watch him in action."
Alvarez (12-0, 8 KOs) will pursue his fourth straight knockout victory against former title challenger Edison Miranda (35-8, 30 KOs).
"Edison is only 32 years old, but he is aware that he must absolutely win Sept. 28 because it is his last chance, explaining why he has trained in Florida with so much determination," said promoter Leon Margules. "Because he and Alvarez are both Colombian, their fight is so much more personal, passionate and emotional for both warriors."
Lemieux (29-2, 28 KOs) will pursue his fifth straight consecutive stoppage victory against Marcus Upshaw (15-10-2, 7 KOs) after having lost two straight to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine by seventh-round knockout and majority decision, respectively.
"At 6-foot-4, with an aggressive style, it is possible that David may look bad at times in this fight," said Lemieux's trainer, Marc Ramsay. "But this is the kind of strong and complicated opponent that will allow David to grow."
Michel said neither the Pascal, Alvarez or Lemieux fights will be televised by HBO, although each will be broadcast on pay-per-view in Canada.
Also appearing is welterweight Antonin Decarie against Salim Larbi, 147-pounder Kevin Bizier opposite Giuseppe Lauri, and light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev against Rayco Saunders.
Stevenson-Cloud is part of a split-site, doubleheader on HBO that will end with former WBC middleweight titleholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. taking on Bryan Vera in a 173-pound catchweight bout from Carson, Calif.
