Carlos Hernandez, the brawling former junior lightweight titleholder, plans to have a good-bye fight in El Salvador, the land of his ancestors.
The fight would take place in February. No opponent has been selected.
“We’re going to pick the opponent carefully,” said Veronica Hernandez, the fighter’s wife and manager. “We’ll look for somebody as old as he is, maybe a former champion. We’re waiting to see if HBO-Plus, their series in Latin America, is interested. If not, we’ll do it anyway.”
Hernandez (43-8-1, 24 knockouts) surprised those who believed he was finished by giving Vicente Escobedo 10 rounds of hell before losing a decision in April in Austin, Texas. Still, at 38 and with many wars behind him, many expected him to retire.
