Russell headlines Fight Night Club card Thursday

Undefeated featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr. will headline the Fight Night Club show this Thursday (Oct. 28) at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Russell (12-0, 9 knockouts), is scheduled to face hard-nosed journeyman Guadalupe DeLeon (8-11, 4 KOs) in a six-round bout.

The special Halloween edition of Fight Night Club — dubbed Fright Night Club by Golden Boy Promotions — will mark the 2008 U.S. Olympian's third appearance on the monthly series. In his first two FNC appearances, Russell stopped Rodrigo Aranda in two rounds in June and blasted Mauricio Pastrana in one round in July.

The 22-year-old southpaw, who is coming off a first-round KO of Willie Villanueva in September, is on a seven-bout knockout streak since going the four-round distance against Noe Lopez Jr. last October. No opponent has been able to get out of the third round against the ultra-fast boxer from Maryland.

However, DeLeon is known for his chin. The 31-year-old journeyman from Mission, Texas, has gone the distance with FNC alums Ronny Rios, Charles Huerta, and Derrick Wilson in competitive fights in the past year. DeLeon outpointed Wilson over four rounds in December.

In the four-round co-featured bout on the Oct. 28 card, unbeaten lightweight Fidel Maldonado Jr. (4-0, 4 KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M., faces John Willoughby (2-5, 1 KO) of Atlanta.

Also, in a six-round swing bout, junior lightweight prospect Yakubu Amidu (13-2-1, 13 KOs), of Hollywood, Calif., by way of Ghana, will face Lopez Jr. (7-5, 5 KOs), the last man to take Russell the distance.

Light heavyweight prospect Trevor McCumby, a teenage amateur star from Phoenix, Az., will open the broadcast in a four-round bout.

Shane Mosley Jr., the 19-year-old son of the former three-division champ, will also be competing that night in a non-televised three-round amateur bout.

Mosley, who will compete in a junior middleweight fight against Ivan Lazaro of Carson, Calif., will accompanied by his father and trainer.

“I'm very proud of Shane Jr., and I know all the hard work he's been putting into his boxing career,” said Shane Mosley Sr. “This is a tough sport, but he's got the heart, determination and talent to make it.”

The Oct. 28 card will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net and its regional sports network affiliates (check local listings) and streamed live online at www.ustream.com and www.RingTV.com at 8 p.m. PT/11 p.m. ET. Doors open at 6 p.m. PT and the first bell rings at 7 p.m. PT.

The first 100 fans to arrive dressed in a Halloween costume for “Fright Night Club” edition of FNC will be admitted free of charge.
