Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will headline what could be a deep card on March 5 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., but no opponent has been selected, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said.
The fight of the night might on the undercard. Schaefer said lightweight Robert Guerrero might fight fellow contender Michael Katsidis, although no deal has been reached.
Guerrero is coming off a one-sided decision over Vicente Escobedo in November. Katsidis was stopped by Juan Manuel Marquez in nine rounds in a riveting brawl in November.
Also, James Kirkland could make his return on the card. Kirkland will be released from a half-way house on Jan. 14 and the move to Las Vegas, where he will work trainer Ken Adams.
Schaefer wouldn’t say who Alvarez might fight.
“We’re still working on an opponent,” he said.
Alvarez easily outpointed veteran Lovemore N'Dou last month.
