When middleweight champion Sergio Martinez will battle unbeaten Ukranian Sergiy Dzinziruk on HBO Saturday night, he’ll do it without the help of trainer Gabriel Sarmiento.
“Gabriel won’t be in the corner because of some personal issues,” promoter Lou DiBella said at Thursday’s final press conference at the MGM Grand Arena at the Foxwoods resort in Mashantucket, Conn. “It’s private, so there’s not much I can say about it. But Gabriel was with Sergio in training camp all the way, so they have worked on everything together.”
Sarmiento’s brother, Pablo, will act as Martinez’s chief trainer against Dzinziruk, a longtime junior middleweight champion who brings a 37-0 record, with 23 KOs, into the fight.
“Pablo is from the same school (as Gabriel), so this will be OK,” said Martinez, 46-2-2, 25 KOs. “It’s nothing that is a surprise. I am well-trained and ready.”
