Actor Mark Wahlberg said a sequel to “The Fighter” might be in the works, picking up where the original left off and including the trilogy of epic fights that made Micky Ward into a boxing legend.
“I’m trying to plant the idea in everyone’s head that we should do — not five or six “Fighters” like “Rocky” — but one more, because the big thing Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti,” Wahlberg told collider.com. “So we’re talking about possibly taking one more run at it.”
Wahlberg, who portrayed Ward in the original, said he believes the original cast would happily return for a sequel.
“Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can’t imagine they wouldn’t want to go back,” he said. “But it’s still kind of in the early stages.”
Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won Oscars for their roles in “The Fighter,” and Amy Adams earned a nomination.
Wahlberg currently is in New Orleans shooting “Contraband,” an action thriller that will co-star Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Diego Luna, Lukas Hass and Giovanni Ribisi.
