Gonzalez retains 108-pound title

Nicaraguan Roman Gonzalez braved a hostile crowd at Plaza San Diego in Puebla, Mexico, to win a competitive unanimous decision over Manuel “Chango” Vargas in a junior flyweight main event that was televised Saturday night by Fox Sports Espanol.

Gonzalez (28-0, 23 knockouts), known as “El Chocolate,” kept his WBA title belt via two judges’ scorecards that read 116-112, and a third that was 119-109.

The titleholder controlled the first half of the fight, but Vargas (29-8-1, 13 KOs)rallied in the final four, the highlight being a toe-to-toe slugfest that brought the crowd to its feet in Round 9. The Mexican underdog matched Gonzalez punch for punch in the final three rounds, backing him up for much of that action, but Gonzalez employed a stick-and-move strategy to win the 12th.
In the co-feature, former lightweight title challenger Ricardo Dominguez (33-7-2, 20 KOs) won a 10-round split decision over Luis Antonio Arceo (23-11-3, 15 KOs).
